OTTAWA – Canada Post is pleased that a special examination by the Office of the Auditor General of Canada and KPMG found that Canada Post has good practices in place to oversee the running of the Corporation and to manage its operations. The special examination report can be found here.
The joint auditors found that overall, Canada Post has good management practices in place for corporate governance, strategic planning, performance management and reporting, and corporate risk management. They also found that Canada Post has good systems and practices for managing key contracts and suppliers and for training and health and safety. Their special examination concludes that there is reasonable assurance that there were no significant deficiencies in the systems and practices examined at Canada Post.
They also found that Canada Post undertook many initiatives to make its vehicle fleet more environmentally friendly, and has processes in place to manage, review and report on its environmental performance. Canada Post is developing a company-wide environmental strategy which will include targets and implementation plans. Canada Post agrees with the auditors’ recommendation that it continue to develop that strategy. Canada Post also agrees with recommendations to establish targets to measure its performance against strategic objectives and to strengthen its risk management framework.
Special examinations assess whether a Crown corporation’s systems and practices provide reasonable assurance that its assets are safeguarded and controlled, its resources are managed economically and efficiently, and its operations are carried out effectively. Under the Financial Administration Act, Canada Post must undergo a special examination at least once every 10 years. The last one was conducted in 2009 and released early in 2010.
