Create direct mail campaigns with Campaign Manager

With Smartmail Marketing Campaign Manager, you can design an audience for your next campaign.

You can choose between Postal Code Targeting and Personalized Mail for a target audience of 100 addresses or more. Each offers different data options to fit your needs.

For complete overview of Postal Code Targeting and Personalized Mail, view the customer guides:

    Postal Code Targeting
    Personalized Mail

When you complete an order, mailing lists and data will be provided to the mail service provider identified in each campaign.

Each list is valid for 90 days.

    Geotargeting

There are 3 ways to target your audience:

    • By city or municipality
    • By FSA (includes all postal codes that begin with the same 3 first characters)
    • By individual postal code.

As you’re geotargeting, we make sure that the address count is accurate and no addresses are duplicated (even if you enter “Toronto” AND “M4M”, we’ll only count each address once).

Most cities or municipalities may not reflect amalgamation initiatives. For example, typing Toronto may not include addresses in East York, North York, York, Scarborough or Etobicoke. Vancouver may not include Richmond or Surrey.

City counts include all postal codes that are part of a defined city. For example, if addresses in a postal code span two cities, then all addresses in that postal code will be included in the count and mailing file defined in this tool.

Tips for uploading bulk postal codes

    For best results:

    • If pasting up to 500 postal codes, use commas to separate them
    • To upload an Excel file of up to 10,000 postal codes:
      • Place all postal codes in column A only
      • Remove all blank rows

    Address type filtering

Although you can’t target the whole country all at once, you can put together your audience by targeting specific address types.

    Houses

These are residential dwellings that may be detached, semi-detached or attached in a row. They have separate entrances.

    Apartments

These are self-contained residential units within a high-rise or low-rise, multiple-unit building of three or more such units with a common main entrance to the building.

    Businesses

These are buildings and structures where the primary activity is commercial, industrial or institutional. Institutional includes, but is not limited to churches, hospitals, nursing homes and schools.

    Farms

These are residential and business buildings associated with a defined area of land (eg. fields) used to grow crops, raise animals or fish.

If a business is operated from a house or apartment which is also a residence, the address is classified as a house or apartment.

Excluding specific addresses using a suppression file

By excluding (or suppressing) addresses, you can save money and focus on addresses you want to reach. For example, if your campaign’s goal is to gain new customers, you can exclude your current customers’ addresses.

Tips for formatting a suppression file

Do not use dots or periods following the street abbreviation or unit number – use St not St. and use Apt not Apt.

You can put the full address in Address Line 1 (201 – 123 Any St) or put the street address in Address Line 1, and the unit number in Address Line 2 (Address Line 1 - 123 Any St and Address Line 2 Apt 201). We might not match every address you upload with this tool.

English address formats yield the best results.

Follow the Canada Post Addressing Guidelines for best address matching results.

If you want your address lists cleaned or would like a better rate of suppression address matching, contact us.

Tips for uploading a suppression file

    • Use row 1 as the header row
    • Columns A to E must follow the order of: Address Line 1, Address Line 2, City, Province, Postal Code
    • Remove all blank rows
    • Include up to 10,000 addresses

Use the suppression address template in the application to quickly format your address columns.
